Atlético Madrid beat 10-man Real Madrid 2-1 at the Metropolitano on Sunday, handing José Mourinho a derby defeat and leaving his side six points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona.
A quiet first half came to life after the break. Dean Huijsen pulled back Giuliano Simeone as he ran through on goal, and after a check at the pitchside monitor the referee upgraded the defender’s yellow card to a straight red. Alejandro Grimaldo converted the penalty in the 53rd minute.
David doubles the lead
Six minutes later Jonathan David turned in Giuliano Simeone’s low cross for his third goal in three games. Thibaut Courtois kept Real in touch with a save from Julián Álvarez, and Antonio Rüdiger headed in a Bernardo Silva free kick in the 89th minute, but Atlético held on.
Simeone finally beats Mourinho
Mourinho had won all three league derbies against Diego Simeone during his first spell in charge. This defeat, Real’s second of the season, lifts Atlético into second place, one point above their neighbours. Mourinho was sharply critical of the refereeing afterwards, while Simeone said coaches should show officials more respect.
