Top seed Alexander Zverev won the US Open on Sunday, beating eighth seed Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 in three hours and 33 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
It was the 29-year-old’s second Grand Slam title, following his breakthrough at Roland-Garros in June, and it came six years after he let a two-set lead slip against Dominic Thiem in the 2020 final.
Shelton pushes him all the way
Shelton broke Zverev in the final game of the third set to extend the match, becoming the first American man to win a set in a major final since Andy Roddick in 2009. But Zverev broke straight back at the start of the fourth and pulled away.
Zverev was so focused that he didn’t realise he had won on championship point until his brother Mischa told him from courtside. He is only the second German man to win the US Open, after Boris Becker in 1989.
A season of surprises
Second seed Carlos Alcaraz lost to Shelton in the quarter-finals, and fourth seed Novak Djokovic went out in the first round. Shelton rises to a career-high world No. 4.
