For more than 50 years, European knockout ties that were level on aggregate were decided by away goals: the team that scored more goals away from home went through.
Why it went
UEFA abolished the rule for all of its club competitions from the 2021-22 season. It argued that home advantage had shrunk over the years, and that the rule was making home teams too cautious, afraid of conceding a goal that counted double.
What happens now
If a two-legged tie is level on aggregate after the second leg, it goes to 30 minutes of extra time. If it is still level, it is settled by a penalty shootout. Away goals scored in extra time no longer count extra either.
